Grandpa was a Mason, and Grandma belonged to Eastern Star, the women's group; so Mom was a Rainbow girl. There were a lot of dances for the kids, and Mom went to all of them. I think it was a big social outlet during high school in the 1930's. She loved to dance and she was good at it. She could also do a perfect cartwheel. I can remember her doing them out on the lawn when I was a girl.
This was taken after she finished high school. She was such a pretty girl. She and her friends spent a lot of time together while their husbands were overseas during World War II. One of the things they did was take photos to send to the guys.
Mom is 87 years old now and she only weighs sixty pounds. She has had a stroke and is paralyzed on one side. She is deaf. What she does still have is a family who loves her, and good memories of a life well lived. And she has the hope of a happy reunion with loved ones in the near future. Today is a good day to remember the pretty girl who is my mother.
I posted this in 2008. Today is Mother's Day, 12 May 2013. This morning I was remembering the years of having dinners on Mother's Day, planting flowers, and being there for my mother. She was a beautiful girl. I think of her as being happy now, and I am glad.
